The mother was found dead 14 years ago at Mariehem – the sons demand answers: “Want to get compensation”

It was early in the morning on October 28, 2012 that the family’s apartment at Mariehem in Umeå started to burn with full force.

– My little brother woke me up and said it was on fire, says one of the sons who was in the home.

Everyone in the family got out of the home, except the mother, who remained in the home dead. The eldest son, who was 13 at the time, was on a farm and heard about his mother’s death when the police came to pick him up.

– They called me up on stage, so I was happy because I thought I might have won something. But before I got on stage, I saw that there were two policemen there, he says and continues:

– I was paralyzed. My whole life was turned upside down that day.

The police classified the incident as a murder and suspect that the fire was set to cover up the murder.

Suspect had previously threatened with a knife

A man who had previously been sentenced to forensic psychiatric care for having threatened the woman with a knife was arrested on suspicion of the murder, but after a few months the investigation was dropped due to lack of evidence.

The prosecutor said, however, that there was some evidence and the possibility that the preliminary investigation would be resumed in the future. The police have never released the cause of death because they believe it could affect the possibility of solving the case.

The sons were frustrated that nothing happened

The children, who are now adults, are frustrated that nothing happened in the investigation. They want the case to be noticed and the mother to receive redress.

– The technology available now is better than then. First address the evidence that exists, but also new evidence. If anyone knows anything more or withholds anything.

– Mother was everything to us, says the eldest son.
